Abstract

Every maker has a mental shelf of ideas covered in dust: projects too niche, too time-consuming, too far outside their skillset to ever get built.

Every era has had its own answer to that shelf.

Intricate weaving patterns, once the privilege of master craftspeople, became programmable with punchcards. Manufacturing, once the domain of factories, came home in the shape of 3D printers. Building software products, once gated behind owning the hardware to run them, was unlocked by the Cloud. Each revolution lowered the threshold between imagination and creation by removing at least one constraint: skills, tools, time.
AI agents are unlocking time. They are the extra set of hands that let us finally pull those ‘useless’ ideas off the shelf.
Follow me through a journey from loom to 3D printer to agentic pipeline, and see what becomes possible when the only constraint left is your imagination. Because the freedom to explore useless ideas is where real innovation lives.
And, oh: can you find the secret message woven through these threads?
